3 year old springer starting to be aggressive

by Julie
(scotland)

I have a three year old springer who has always been very timid. he has been attacked a few times as a puppy and the most recent time being last summer.

He now appears to be being aggressive on occasions and unpredictable.

I am now wary letting him off lead when out for a walk but he also gets snarly when he is on lead

why is he doing this?

Aggression with unexpected noises NEW
by: Anonymous

Our 16 month old springer has started to lash out at me when there is an unexpected noise - phone ringing, post through letterbox, doorbell. It is really worrying me. I have done lots of research about it and it seems to suggest she thinks she is leader of the pack.. We are doing things to try and change this attitude but things seem to be getting worse. We are trying to densensitize her to these things. She is quite a nervous dog, especially on a lead, she will lie down until another dog passes. We are going to take her to the vets to see if they can offer advice or suggest someone to help us understand and improve the behaviour. She went to puppy training for several months.

COCKER SPANIEL NEW

Ive had the same problem. Started to notice her being very teritorial last 2 months. I have a profession whereby she as socialised from 8wks old (now 14mths). This is our 4th week at dog behaviour classes. I have noticed a huge difference, basically she had become 'top dog' and I had to take control...as for the timidness he says dont push her onto people who want to stroke her, let her access the environment in her own time and it will come...

aggressive springer NEW
by: Anonymous

my boy can be snappy if other dogs keep bothering him, he puts up with it for a while, but then just says NO, because he is busy sniffing and running. If he is only telling other dogs off for bothering him I wouldn't worry, but if he aggressive without cause then maybe he needs to be socialised more within a controlled environment - friends' dogs who are calm and on lead initially to see how he reacts - sounds as if he is not very confident - like my springer
