4.5 month old Springer pup wont retrieve toys

by Libby frost
(Cornwall England)

Our puppy who my husband eventually wants to use as a gun dog thinks its really funny to run around the house with things rather than giving them up when asked ( which he does gracefully i must admit ), this is really winding me up . before we did puppy training classes he would do this perfectly just playing , bring it back, we throw it again, no problems. the puppy training classes seem to have messed him up as he attended them as an older puppy when they are probably better suited to a 8 - 9 week old pup, as he knew "sit" and "down", before attending , and they do everything with treats , which he concentrated more on that, and other dogs, more than us? Any advice gratefully received.

two crazy bitches NEW
by: J.J.

I have two springers, both bitches.
One is from 100% pure bred irish hunting dogs,, the other extremely questionable.
One retrieves with the most magnificent leaps and back flips and somersaults,,,,,, and drops to your feet every time.
The other is competitive and always trying to be dominant, but until recently she could not challenge in the air under a high ball and she would never bring the ball directly back. She would run around showing off and hold onto the ball.
I rigged the outcome of my throws and when she felt she was dominating the competition then she started dropping the ball directly at my feet without any messing. Since then i have become more involved and dominant and she follows commands.

Same NEW
by: Sasha

I'm afraid I don't have any advice as I have the same problem with mine. He never retrieved even as a puppy though. My dog is now four years old and we have been going to obedience classes since he was a puppy.

Four years of solid training and we finally managed to move up to the advanced class purely because everyone in the school knew how hard we work and he does everything else perfectly. So they just overlook our retrieves during training, it is annoying though as I wanted to do competition with him but he needs a solid retrieve, but that's just life, not all dogs even in the same breed, are good or capable of the same things. He is a super smart dog but he does not enjoy/understand/want to/get/ retrieving.

All I can say is good luck don't stop trying (I still practise in the hope that one day he'll wake up and the pieces will click together)and if you find a way that works please share it :-)
