8 year old springer gained weight when we got a pup
by Micky Richards
We have an 8 year old springer (Oscar) who was always in good shape, loves swimming, chasing tennis balls and going running with me but last may we got a springer cocker cross pup (Alfie) who is coming up 11 months old and since we got Alfie, Oscar has gained quite a bit of weight. Now since Alfie has got bigger, stronger and faster Oscar is more reluctant to give up his tennis balls as Alfie always beats him to them and therefore Oscar doesn't join in as much anymore and although he is getting 2 good walks a day he isn't running around anywhere near as much as he used to before Alfie came along and I fear this is why he has gained weight. We used to feed Oscar 3 scoops of beef flavoured wagg a day but we could feed him on a morning and he would still have food left in the evening but now Alfie is on the scene we feed them both 1 scoop each on a morning and 1 scoop each on an evening and they both eat it straight away. Is this common when introducing a puppy into an older dogs life or is the something different we should be doing regarding exercise and/or feeding Oscar?
Thanks in advance for your help
