Am I walking my Puppies too much?

by Michelle
(UK)

I'm new to springer spaniels but have got 2 puppies. Corey and Jess, they are 3 months and 4 months. My question is how much exercise should they have at this age?

Ive been taking them out for the past 2 weeks for a about an hour each day..but I'm a bit concerned from your website that this may be too much. They are taken to the forest or beach and just run and run...no lead ...is this too much for them ? they love and etc but I don't to damage them by exercising them too much too soon.

Over Exercising
by: Anonymous

What type of health problems occur from over exercising? My puppy is about 3 months old and loves hiking without a lease. Is this too much for her? Is it too late to prevent her body's propper development if we already took her on hikes?

You need to do more obedience training to exercise them at this stage
by: Anna@love-springer-spaniels

HI Michelle
At this stage an hour a day is too much as their bones are still developing and it can cause them problems in later life, however in a few months time that will be perfect for them.

At this moment in time concentrate on little and often, and plenty of obedience training and play to tire them out - it will pay dividends in the long run trust me.

Play will bond you with the pups and as for the obedience training its worth putting in the hours.

When George was this age he would get about 6 x10-15min training sessions a day plus a 15 - 20 min walk in the morning and again in the evening. Then build it up month by month.

By the time they are 12 -18months then you can just try and tire them out.

Hope that helps.
