Can anyone please offer any advice on our Springers new dirty habit?

Our Springer is four and half and we have had him for three years, having got him from a rescue centre. He is a good dog who is very obeidient and well behaved. Although recently he has started pooing in the house and eating it. We regulary excericise him, with at least four good walks a day. He doesnt appear to be unwell, he loves his food and enjoys his walks and is playfull and active. We have tried giving him extra walks and attention and this doesnt seemed to have helped. We would be grateful of any advice or suggestions. Thank you :)

Feed him pineapple chunks - it will make the taste of poo unbearable and break the habit

eating poo NEW
by: Anonymous

our springer puppy does this and we have tried everything to stop him..pineapple, courgettes and even tablets from the vet...but he just carries right on and if i am not behind him with a bag when he goes he turns straight round and eats it..it is the most disgusting thing i have ever seen and my other two dogs , 1 springer and 1 cocker have never done this..i am hoping that he will eventually grow out of it

Make it taste bad with pineapple NEW
by: Divodoll

If you feed him pineapple it will make the poo taste bad and he won't want to eat it so won't have the reward for doing his poo in the house. This might even break the habit since there's no reward.

I'm going to do this with my Springer. Not because she eats her own poo but the Jack Russell just LOVES her Springer do-dos!

Poo in the house NEW
by: Anonymous

What food are you feeding your dog? Have you suddenly changed food or treats? What happens when they do poo in the house - are you telling them off for doing this. As the other person said, they might be wanting to eat it, so you don't see the evidence.

Has something happened in garden to put them off?

Sometimes it's attention seeking. My Springer sometimes eats my other Springers poo but does it when I'm around to get my attention.

Eating poop NEW
by: Michele

There are several theories why dogs eat poop. I'm not sure any of them are right. Some believe they eat poop because they are lacking a certain enzyme. Some think they eat it in order to hide it. I have 2 Springers and an Australian Shepard. Neither Springer does this, but my Aussie does. He only eats their poop, not his. You're right - it's digusting!

There are things you can buy to add to their food to discourage it. One item is Dis-Taste. It's a chewable tablet and supposedly it will stop the poop eating.

If I were you I would be more concerned why he has suddenly starting going potty in the house.
