Can I give my springer something mild to calm her down a little?

I have an 8 year old springer who just will not relax and be at ease.. ever!. She is constantly boiling over all the time - even straight after excercise she is still like it. She is frantic if you pet her and give her attention and she is frantic if you dont. If you pet her she isnt happy with just being stroked - she tries to climb on you. I have tried more excersise and ignorong her if she is going bonkers for attention until she is calm - but she never gets calm.. she just tries to clamber up if you ignore her. I have a lab/springer cross of the same age who is very calm and is starting to get fed up with Florence jumping all over her all the time and has been getting bad tempered with her. We love having her around us in the day and evening but at the moment quite often I will have to make her leave the room because she wont settle and keep trying to climb all over us and the children. Can you offer any advice? Is there anything mild I can give her to help her be a bit calmer - she just seems very anxious all the time.

Hi there
What are you feeding her? Many springers calm down within day of being placed on a hypoallergenic diet, brands such as Skinners, Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved and Burns are all great brands of hypoallergenic foods. Additives in a springers diet can make them very hyperactive

Good Luck

I would second that. Like children dogs can react badly to the food they eat. If you are buying a food with additives in, such as the stuff you can get at supermarkets then you will have a hyperactive dog. Personally I think Burns is the best and though it may seem expensive you feed much less so it works out quite economical. A Springer by 8 years old should be much calmer

I agree with the above, our springer in on Wagg and this is cheaper than the other stuff and this calms him.......Springers and just bonkers. Everytime one of us move he gets up, it takes him half hour or so to settle after we have all sat down. we don;t look at himm and then he eventually gives in,
good luck

I have the same issue with CeCe, my 3 y.o. springer. She is one of 4 dogs and, at times, drives me nuts. She seems to get even more hyper with exercise and attention. I tried putting her on Rescue Remedy but that didn't help. She is already on a grain free diet called Taste of the Wild. I have come to the conclusion that I am just going to have to live with it and hope she calms with age.

If your in the uk i'd give Wagg a try http://www.waggfoods.co.uk/default.aspx
We've fed our dogs and pups we've bred on it for years, all our dogs are strong and healthy. It's a lot cheaper than other foods but offers the same nutrition without all the additives, give your dog likes of bakers is like giving a kid some smarties lol.

If it is purely anxiety i'd give this a go, i've heard a lot of positive results from using it.
