Does Spaying a Springer Spaniel affect Bladder Control?

I recently had my female Springer spayed, she is 6 1/2 months old. Although she was well house trained prior to the operation, since the operation we are back to lots of puddles. The Vet said to expect some loss of bladder control, but I was just wondering has anyone experienced this? And could you advise how long this is likely to last?

I think she still wants to go outside, she does let the odd bark but unless you get to the back door immediately she will generally not have been able to hold it.

Yes we had our springer spayed and within three months she became incontinent - She was put on Propalin 4mgs twice a day. She had a further bout of incontinence and the propalin was increased to 7mgs twice a day which has been fine for the last two years -
Before she was spayed she had no problem so I really believe it was spaying that caused the incontinence.

I have two Springers, We love them to death. I have experienced my female getting UTI"S often after I had her spayed. I know the early signs now. If I get here treated in the early stage she does not have accidents. But she goes a lot and its a couple drop here and there everytime I take her out. ( she will go serveral times each and evertime I take her out, but its only a couple drops) She was spayed at 6 months,now 2.
I have done some research and it is suggested that you wait until she goes into heat for the first time before spaying. This is suppose to help with UTI's, bladder infections and kidney stones...I guess its up to how your vet sees it. If I do it again I would probably wait.
However my male piddles. I had him neutered at 6 months and every since then when he gets excited he piddles. he did not do this before surgery. He's now 3.

Spayed female incontinence

I had my 2 Year old springer spayed and she was perfectly house trained. The old procedure for spaying females was to "tie the tubes", now the vets have started to remove all of the female parts, including those that encourage estrogen production. In doing so, there are less organs to be effected long term by cancer and other diseases however, the thickening of the wall that allows the dog to control bladder is lessoned as a result. My dog is now on Stylbestrol once a week to help control the bladder which is actually the hormone estrogen. It does help but I do feel concern for such a young healthy dog being on a long term medicine. Im hoping its a better solution than that of pyometra, mammory tumours, and the other diseases that can take your loved animals life too soon. I have had 4 springer prior to the girl i have now, and only one at the age of 9 was introduced to stylbestrol. Good luck, springers rule

Bladder Issues

Hi

My femable springer puppy had the same problem - she was trained and then had lots of accidents in the house - turns out she had cystitis and a week on antibiotics from the vet cured it !

Spaying

I have two female Springers. One was spayed at 6 months, the other at 10 months. Neither experienced any bladder control problems afterward. Has your vet done any testing for a urinary tract infection and / or bladder / kidney infection? If not, I'd ask that he did or I might even see another vet for a 2nd opinion.
