Found on a Rainy Day......
by Jim Brown
(San Diego, CA)
About ten years ago I nearly ran over a little springer that darted in front of my truck as it chased a rabbit. Days later I found him tangled in some wire in a maintenace yard behind my office.
Concerned about the dog's welfare, I went to the couple who owned him and asked them to keep him confined. Their response was that he wandered into their yard on a rainy day a year earlier so they named him Rainy Day. They believed that he had been dumped since they lived at the end of the road and dogs and cats were frequently dumped there.
Announcments in papers and "Dog Found" posters produced no one to claim him. The couple then explained that since he wasn't really their dog and he was causing problems by wandering off of their property they would turn him over to Animal Regulation.
Instead, I ended up with him and he has turned out to be the best bird dog and family pet you can imagine. Estimated to be at least age 12 and beginning to feel the pain and limitations of arthritis he has now been retired from hunting. This fall another English Springer will be joining us and in keeping up with name line we are on will be called Sunny Day.
