Freckles - A Springer Spaniel doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give her your heart and she will give you hers

by Rose
(Ireland)

My Springer Spaniel was put to sleep on Saturday and my heart is broken. She has been with us since she was 8 weeks old and we have been though so much together. She was 13 years and 3 months old.

She was diagnosed with a massive tumour in her chest about 2 weeks ago and the vet told me she would not live for much longer. This has affected me more than I ever realised. I never realised how strong our bond was til I found out it was going to be broken. When I came home I relished our last days together doing all her favourite things and giving her favourite foods. I wrote a cheesy poem that day when I came home from the vets and I will share this with you:

Freckles 7.4.97 - 31.7.10

Missy is the name we gave you that day
When we brought you down to our house to stay
Liver and White with loads of speckles
After a week we named you Freckles

You were so cute with your lovely long ears
We loved you so much and now we have tears
Its been 13 years now and you have got old
My heart is breaking at the news we’ve been told

You were part of our life for such a long time
We took you for granted so much its a crime
You were always there when we needed you
To comfort us when we felt blue

I look at you now and see your sad eyes
And wish the news we just heard was all just lies
We will love and care for you more than before
Until the time comes we can’t do anymore

I dread that day but it draws near
When you go to sleep without a tear

My daughters very thoughtfully went out and bought me a new springer spaniel as they could see how much I was suffering the loss of my beautiful Freckles. I now have a lovely black and white spaniel which I named Gracie and I will appreciate every single minute of her life cos it goes by so quickly.

So so sorry for your loss, and your poem was wonderful and made me cry!

It is so true that we should relish every moment of their lives as they are gone so quickly.

All I can say is that when they are in pain then the best thing we can do is to let them rest in peace as I was told once that we only want them to live on because of our own selfishness. I tried to think of this when we lost Holly (13.2.09) and it helped me deal with the doubts in my mind of whether we were doing the right thing.

Hope you will be very happy with Gracie x

the best friend ever

i read this page and all the posts with tears in my eyes. I too lost my springer Molly in August - I had her for 12 years since she was 13 weeks old. She had arthritis and cataracts but I think she lost her will to live in the end. I feel so guilty because I did not spend so much time with her in the last few months. I have photos of all over over the house and carry one in my work ID. I miss her so much but am not ready to get another springer just yet.

I am sorry for your loss. I havelost two Springers in the last two years, one to cancer and the other to old age and a stroke. We still have two Springers, onethat just turned 10 years of age and the other is almost two years of age. I've learned to enjoy the heck out of them while we have them, as life is so short.

So Sad
by: Cathy

Hi Lynn

I really feel your pain - last year I lost my collie cross terrier to a tumor also. I still think of her every single day. The pain will never go away but the best consolation you can give yourself and I have done is remind yourself of what a fantastic life she had with you and your family - there are so many dogs out there who have terrible lives and I know for sure that freckles had a brill one.

Our Molly died in November 09 and in April 10 we aquired Ozzie a springer spaniel puppy (thats what let me to this site) - she brough so much joy to our lives and although I felt so guilty for replacing Molly I know in my heart that Molly would want another doggie to have the brill life filled with love laughter and happiness that she had !

God bless

I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for the loss of Freckles. The poem you wrote for her was so moving, it made me cry for your loss. Freckles was very lucky to have been loved so much by you and I am certain that she knew just how much she was loved.

Freckles

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Freckles. I know it is so hard to part with our favorite companions. They love us endlessly and unconditionally. They bring us so much joy without even trying.

My oldest Springer is almost twelve. I often think she probably has 2, maybe 3 years left at best and I know I will be devastated to lose her.

Your poem was beautiful and a lovely tribute to Freckles, your best companion of many years. I'm glad you have a new Springer to share your love with. I don't think anything helps heal our hearts faster than a new puppy to love, especially if that puppy is a English Springer Spaniel! And Freckles would want you to share your heart again.
