Gizmo my 2 1/2 year old springer spaniel just doesn't put on weight

by Ria
(Manchester )

Hi all,,

I have had my dog nearly a year he's about 2 and a half... He was mistreated and I took him in, he was very thin (and still seems to be) I have tried him with everything but still no joy and I don't want to keep trying and upsetting his stomach! He's a beautiful dog (apart from his malting, it drives me mad) has a great sense of humour and listens to everything I tell him! Although he's a little cheeky at times! Were a young couple and are at work all day but that doesn't seem to bother him as I think he's used to it! He's goes out of a morning before work and then a few times when we get home! He's a very kiddy little chap and is always running around! Is this why he doesn't out weight on??

Some one please help it's starting to worry me :-(

Thank you

Ria & Gizmo :-) xxxx

Putting weight on a springer NEW
by: Celeste

Hi, i know how you feel, i also rescued a thin Springer and struggled to put weight on him.
It took me several months to get him to 18kgs but i found this worked.

Feed a high energy dry food for working dogs with raw meats and veg, plus a bone or chicken wing during the day helped.

My Springer can put on the weight now with this diet but as soon as i give him a few days with extra exercise i find he loses it quickly and i have to incress his intake.

Its just a matter of monitoring his weight and activity levels.

Good luck and i hope you can find something that works :-)

Weight NEW
by: Michele

Dogs, like people, have different metabolisms. I would be sure I was feeding him a good brand of food, which is not usually one that can be found at the grocery store. Personally, I do not feed a commercial brand dog food as I don't believe it contains the proper nutrition, but many disagree with that and it boils down to a matter of opinion.

I believe somewhere on this site Anna has a recommended brand of food. You might see if you can find that and give it a try.
