Has anyone dealt with a springer who shows aggression towards its owners?

We adopted a 5-year old male springer in 2009 and knew at that time that he had aggression issues towards other dogs. Over the past year and a half, he has turned on my husband on five occasions, biting him and drawing blood. This almost always happened when my dog was in my presence; hence, we assumed that he was protecting me. In the last week and for no apparent reason, Riley has come at me three times. He hasn't bitten me but growls and shows his teeth. It's very scary and makes me so sad as Riley has had a difficult life.
The springer society (two members) have advised us to have him euthanized before he seriously hurts someone else but we are trying medication through our vet before giving up. Can anyone relate to our dilemma?

You need some professional dog training help right now. Aggression that is allowed to continue only gets worse - much worse. Please seek a good dog training class. Look in your area for a dog training club and give them a call to see if they offer, or can recommend an obedience class. Stay away from the classes offered by local pet shops. If you don't have a dog training club in your area, call the breeder or your vet.

Seriously, you need to take care of this sooner rather than later. Best of luck to you -

Just a thought - have you tried obedience training? I ahve a 11 month old springer and obedience training classes and they have worked wonders for her ........dont give up !
