How do I stop my Springers from eating litter box stuff.

Hi,

I have a 5 year old springer, a cat and just got another springer pup.
Well the older springer started to eat well lets say out of the litter box and the pup saw this now she is.

Question, how do I stop this?? Help!

I bought a covered litter box and they still manage to do this.

If our spaniels cant find it in the litter trays, they sniff it out in the garden. We have 5 cats but never any cat poop!!!

eating cat poop
by: karen, jake's & jess's mum

I had he same problem, seems to me that most dogs like to eat cats poop. Jake my male springer couldn't wait to get to the litter tray. luckily our cat is all grown up now so we haven't got it any more. I had to put a stair gate on the door so that the cat could get in to the room but the dogs couldn't, it was also handy because inquisitive spaniels like to sniff kittens lol.

EEECH...cat pooh...but Indy loves it!
by: Indy's Mama

My 12 yr old Springer Indy loves cat Pooh..We have 4 barn cats who are litter trained. Litter is in barn...that's Indy's first stop. I make a bad noise loudly and he knows he's not supposed to (I can tell by the way he sneaks over there and plucks one out) ...but he still does it! It is gross...haven't tried to add anything to litter..however I have recently tried the Arm and Hammer brand with Baking soda and it seems to have lessened....dunno if that is it..but I'll continue.

try a Clever Cat box!
by: Anonymous

Don't know a dog who will pass up a kitty litter box, or a person who doesn't wish they would! We found a box that springers cannot reach into: the Clever Cat box (online, many pet stores). It looks like a tote box, but has a cat size round hole in the top. Cats enter through the top, but springer necks are not long enough to get the prize! Solved the problem, once and for all.

litter pup
by: Lynn

We had the same problem with our kitten and our pups. One pup loved the kitten food and the other just chose the poop.

It the end I just had to make sure that the litter tray was clear of any poop at all times.

Thankfully our kitten was 1yr today and she has been doing her business outside since she was 6 months.

What about pepper in the tray? Or will your dog just think you are flavouring the 'food'!

I would however have your pup wormed more often than normal as they do suggest it if they eat poop and especially with it being kitten poop as kittens carry more worms. Plus worm your kitten!

Litter Eater
by: Michele

I have the same problem with my younger Springer. It's disgusting! They usually do outgrow this, but mine hasn't. What I finally ended up doing is putting the litter box in a closet. I leave the door open just enough for the cat to get in & out, but not enough for the dog. It's worked well & it has made me clean the litter box more often since it's in an enclosed space!
