Hunting Behaviors of Springer Spaniels

We are losing chickens & ducks in our semi-rural neighborhood and suspect the three Springer Spaniels that are left to run wild when their owner is at work are the culprits.

I had two chickens and a rooster vanish on a day another neighbor saw the three of them run towards my property at the time they vanished. The really strange thing is there is no sign of the poultry, no bodies, no feathers on my property anywhere.

Does this sound to anyone like a group of Springer Spaniels, would they have retrieved the poultry or is it more likely that they would eat the bodies and leave them?? Please someone give me an idea of their hunting behavior patterns prior to approaching their owner.

Thank you in advance!!

Packs
by: Carol Sampson

I do have a pack of springers and live in a rural area. We have chickens at home which they leave alone, but when we are out and about, given half a chance, they will hunt. As a pack they flush & chase their prey; most of the time its a game but if they do catch something they generally bring it back to me.
From my experience if the dogs are killing/catching the chickens & ducks, they will take their bodies back home or to a safe place ie: a kennel. Mine won't eat them but if the dogs are hungry, they will.
What ever is removing the chickens & ducks you still need to talk to the dogs owners. They might be unaware of whats happening. At least if someone tells them they can take appropriate action or, if they don't take notice, you can do something about their lack of care/control
Good luck

Hunters

My springer was a hunter but played with her prey rather than eating it! But I would imagine hunting as a pack it would be very possible. Even if it's not the dogs eating your animals they shouldn't be left to run amuck x

hunting springers
by: Anonymous

It is very possible, my springer has caught a pigeon and lots of rabbits. I would never trust him around ducks or chickens, so yes (especially as they are a pack) it is possible. The springer flushes out game, that is what they do - and mine will carry it away and eat it if he is allowed. We like to rent cottages in the countryside, but I never rent one on a farm for that very reason.

Springers
by: Michele

I have two Springers, but they don't hunt so I'm not familiar with hunting behaviors. I'm guessing there's a big difference between dogs hunting with their human and dogs just out hunting. I've had ducks disappear on my property and I have seen a Fox skulking around, so my best guess is it's him.
