If i buy a springer spaniel




i am thinking of buying a springer spaniel but i have just had cream carpet put down in my living room lol :) would a springer be happy to sleep in the kitchen with a baby gate up and have a medium garden to play in all day thanks.

Buy a pup and also a carpet cleaner!

We have a brown lounge carpet and I still clean it regularly and omg the colour that comes out of it!

Other than wiping their feet and watching them everytime they come in doors I'm afriad there is nothing you can do about the ESS mud magnets.

We have a cream carpet in our bedroom and also cream bedding. The carpet still gets marked although you would think that their feet would be clean once they had made it upstairs....but no.

I also either get muddy prints on the beddings or when I have changed to a darker colour I just see the dog hair! I should really close the bedroom door but our boy loves lying on the bed

My springers are proper mud magnets....they could honestly find a muddy puddle in the sahara...and why shouldn't they lol...thats there nature|

Dogs are wonderful....they are sooo unique...different breeds deliver different behaviours and have characteristics which allow us humans to tailor make a pet that suit our lifestyles and personal preference.
Springers are working dogs...they like nothin more than being scruffy from hours of walkin which includes the muckiest puddles....
You may well be able to train a springer to sleep outside or only come into the kitchen..BUT...
a happy springer is a pack dog and you and your family is pack...and no amount of telling him that he cant come in because of your cream carpet will buffer that blow....to own a springer is to live like the springer....you are his pack and if your not prepared to let him join you after his long walk in the forest then a springer is not for you.

We have cream carpet throughout. It hasn't been a problem. I have a carpet cleaner that I use every once in awhile.

I have had two spaniels, my first (Charlie) and my present ESS, Nellie. I find they will pretty much do as they are trained to do, however, they do not like to be apart from their humans. My Nellie (and Charlie as well) likes sleeping at the floor at the side of my bed. Yours will stay in the kitchen, but will not like it! LOL!

Rosalie, my springer-mix puppy, was the EASIEST dog to potty train! I got her at 5 weeks and she was going reliably outside within a month. The secret? Taking her out every 2 hours (morning, noon and night), after she ate, after a nap and after playing... Basically lived out there.

I won't tell you she never made a mess or Audrey, my standard poodle, didn't have a lot to do with how quickly she caught on, but Rosalie is worth all the carpet cleaner and scrub brushes in the world. But...

Why don't you try to ADOPT a springer, first? That's how Rosalie came into my life.

Wow, you're a brave person! Even if I didn't have 2 Springers I don't think I'd be brave enough to buy a cream colored carpet!

That said, you could probably train your Springer to stay in areas where there isn't any carpet, but as Anna pointed out I think you might find that he wants to be where you are. Springers are very social dogs and they want to be with their 'pack'. And if he's going to be part of your family, he should be allowed to go where everyone else goes. So, just my personal opinion, but if that carpet means that much to you I would pass up the opportunity to buy any kind of puppy.
