Male Springer and Women

My springer Boomer is 2 years old. He is a pretty good listener. I trained him to sit, stay, come, jump, roll over, and other commands.

He seems to have an obsession with my wife and or women.

When he and I are home during the day he gets time outside to run, time to sit at my feet while I work, he sleeps in his crate for a couple hours, goes on short trips with me, but then from 3pm - 5pm he just paces around the house.

Once my wife comes through the door at 5pm, he goes a little ballistic. He will run up to her, run in circles, and is so excited to see her that he sometimes pees a bit on the floor.

He will listen when one of us tells him "down" but he can't hold the command for very long, and she cant walk away and put her clothes and things away without having him next to her.

From that point forward he follows her around the house all night and will whine if he does not get to sit on her lap and exhibits a few annoying behaviors.

Is this normal for a young male springer, or is there some additional training we should work on?

Momma's Dog NEW
by: Julie

I have three Springers in my life, ages 12 - Max, 8 - Winnie, and 9 months - Skye. The puppy greets me when I come home in much the same manner that you describe your boy greeting his momma. I can't greet Max and Winnie because Skye jumps all around trying to steal all of my attention. I've finally learned, recently, to completely ignore Skye until she calms down. She gets absolutely no attention from me until she calms down, sits nicely, and then only after Max and Winnie have gotten a proper greeting from me.

10 and still whines and cries NEW
by: Anonymous

My springer is almost 10 and he is extremely attacted to everyone in the family. My dad is home with him all day and when my mom or I come home he whine and cries and won't stop until he thinks he's got enough attention he will stop, tho it is the same when my dad get home from being out and someone else is home with him. If it's at night when I come home from studying or being out with friends he greets me at the door with a toy and a smile.

Velcro dog
by: Bethany

I have a male who is just over a year old and he's sitting on my feet as I write this. He is constantly by my side and follows me all over the house. He only does this to me--not my husband or children. When my husband comes home from work, my springer is happy to see him and will sit with him on the couch, but the dog will stare at me the entire time I am in the room. If I'm out of the room for an extended period of time, and then come back in, my springer will greet me as if I've been gone for days.

I have no idea if there is any type of training for this behavior. I just assumed that my springer is more attached to me because I am the primary caregiver and it is in a springer's nature to always want to be by their owner's side. I'd love to hear what others have to say.

PS--love your springer's name!
