My 1 year old English Springer Spaniel Chases people on bikes when off the lead

Can you please help?

My nutty 1 year old Springer Spaniel Alfie is fantastic off the lead and has excellent recall. He runs with me through the local hills and is such a lovely good boy. The problem I have is when he comes across a person on a pedal bike whilst he is off the lead. The area we go to is open countryside and he can be typically a few hundred yards up the track in front of me. If he sees someone on a bike in the distance or coming towards me then he will run up to them and bark stopping them in their tracks. He looses all sense of hearing me when I am shouting him down and to come back. He doesn't actually do anything to the person on the bike other than circling them and barking. He can do this when he comes across someone unexpected, i.e. round a corner if they are walking or running alone, although he never bothers someone with a another dog. Do you have any suggestions please to get him uses to bikes.

I borrowed a bike took it home and lay it on the lawn, allowing investigation. But no biting. Then I stood it up and again left it to be investigated. A solid No to any behaviour I didn't like. Finally I got on and rode it. After a week of every day bike time the bike has never been so interesting and a solid No when we come across one on our travels seems to have worked really well. Mollie will even run along side the bike now.Good luck

Hi, I also have the same problem. Diesel is 18mth old,i have tried all sort of things to try and deter him. One thing that seems work, my daughter rides her bike around the garden and each time he comes running, she squirts water at him! He doesn't seem to chase (at the moment) bikes.

Hi there

Have you whistle trained your springer at all? If not then this could be something that would work.
I would suggest starting him on a long line so you have control when you see the cyclist. Have him return to you on the whistle and concentrate on you when the bike travels past - so he isn't totally focussed on bike.
My springer was a little wary of new dogs when I rehomed him, and changing his focus to me rather than the incoming dogs has helped him loads, now he rarely worries and tends to come back to me.
Hope that may be of use to you.
