My 5 year old springer spaniel has started misbehaving!

Hi all,

I have a 5 year old Springer (turning 6 in April) called Wesley and he's always been generally well behaved throughout his life and everyone adores him. But recently he has had a few bad incidences with other male dogs where he has been attacked, I think this can easily be solved by getting him done but haven't done this yet due to possibilities of breeding. Now though another problem has occurred, since meeting a female on heat in the park he won't behave like he use to and have ended up running across fields to catch him, which is very unlike him as usually he would only go as far as a couple of feet infront while walking him. Also once I finally catch him and get him home he then whines and whines at me, and no matter what I do, whether it be give him treats or play with him in the garden he just carries on as soon as I stop. I'm not sure if its maybe cause he's 'pining' for the female or something else...? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Jess

Hi there
I can speak from experience that getting George Neutered made a huge difference and he became so much mre relaxed, its worth considering.

Thank you both, going to try walking him elsewhere - and attempt the cold water treatment at some point! - and see if he calms down, never truly wanted to get him done as he's generally been an angel up until recently. Hopefully he'll be back to normal in a couple of weeks.
Thanks again
Jess

5 year old misbehaving NEW

At 5 years old I am not sure that having a dog "done" will change that much. To me it sounds like all the "bad" behaviour could be due to the female in season leaving her smell around- which takes weeks to disappear- and your dog feeling sexy...try walking him somewhere else and see how that goes. If he still reacts badly to other males and does not listen to you well, ask your vet to have a look at him for safety and advise you. Good luck!

to get done or not to get done.... NEW
by: louise b

I own 2 springers, father and son. Both are 'intact'. When they meet a bitch in heat they do get quite love sick and start howling. On such occasions, I do as the victorians recommended....vigorous exercise and cold water! So a swim in the river to dampen down their ardour! Seriously, that is how I got Toby to settle immediately after his mating with Dude's mum...it seemed to work. The gundog club (WWW.thegundogclub.co.UK) has lots of contributors who are professional breeders and trainers and have lots of good advice on their site. The thing about getting the dog neutered is if it causes any problems with hormonal changes, you can't undo the job! Springers are lively. They are meant to be lively. That is why they are such great dogs! Every problem has a solution, but it doesnt have to be surgical! That is an option, but it is not the only option.
