My first springer spaniel

First of all, just want to say how amazing this site is and I now feel a little more confident about raising my springer!

I've only had Oscar 2 days,he is twelve weeks but he only got his first injections today and the vet told us to keep him confined for another 4 weeks until he gets his booster, so this means no walking or letting him round around grassy parts of the garden for fear of him catching parvo! Im scared he's going to become frustrated and bored, any tips?

And one other thing, on average how long does it take to housebreak a springer puppy as oscar was kept outside and he isn't used to being in a home environment.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback on my site, I am working very hard to upgrade it at the momment so a new look will be coming soon.

Welcome to the world of Springer Love, you are entering a life of fun, frolics and unconditional love.

Best thing to do to stop your pup getting frustrated is to play with him. He is just like a child, play is so important to him right now. It will tire him out and reinforce the bond between you both. Also once you have had a play session have a 10 min training session, do that 3-6 times a day and you will reap the benefits in the future.

As for house training him, it varies but if you are consistent with reinforcing positive praise when he does is right it will come. Springers love to please.

Good luck and don't forget to send us pictures

Hey guys thanks for the feedback ! We have Oscar 3 weeks now and he just got his booster today so one more week and we can take him out! His house training is going brilliantly too, he rarely has an accident !

Me and my boyfriend are arguing about how much we want to feed Oscar eventually, iv always fed my dogs twice a day but he wants him down to one feed, any advice ? We plan to excercise him quite alot.
Thanks ;)

Oscar
by: June

Congrats on Oscar (I love the name, it fits a springer well, rather dignified!)

I trained Emma in one week @ 9 weeks. Consistency is the key and lots of love and rewards. Springers want to please. By the age of
5 months, I was leaving her at home alone, out of
her kennel for 8 hours. It was amazing how fast she learned.

Good luck with Oscar. You are in for alot of lovin'.

Oscar

Congratulations on your new edition! Springers are such great dogs.

Housebreaking varies with every dog. I housebroke my liver/white Springer at 8 weeks of age in 3 days. My black/white Springer we got at 10 months and it took me 4 months to housebreak her.

Consistency is the key to any training. And treats don't hurt either! When I trained my Springers I chose one word for them to relate to; potty. One word is all you need and you use the same one over and over. They begin to understand that they are to go outside and do their stuff when you say it.

And make it fun! Be happy and excited when you take Oscar out. As soon as he goes, immediately praise him, rub him, pet him, give him a treat. After a few days he'll get the hang of it.

Good luck!
