My Spaniel of 10 months is not intrested in retrieving!!

hi i have a 10 month old spaniel called molly. i have trained her from day one and she excells in everything i ask of her, somedays the recall could be better if distracted by a running rabbit or a good smell in a hedge, but that will sharpen up in time. The problem i am having with molly is she is not intrested in retrieving anything unless its a dead bird. which i no sounds strange but ever since she was 8 weeks old she has never been intrested in balls or small dummies, and the game of fetch has always been a game where i throw a ball and i have to go fetch it lol. it was only the other week when i had a dead wood pidgeon she wanted to fetch it. Unfortunatly i dont have many wood pidgeons to use for training.... what can i do to get molly to practice the retrieve and show intrest without using a real bird.

My springer isn't really interested either, but when I took him to gundog training the trainer had me tie a piece of rabbit fur onto a dummy and it works, he will retrieve it (he doesn't love doing it and only ever does it for a reward), but you could try it.

one of our ess would chase a ball all day our other one just isn't interested and prefers running through bushes following scents.
I think some take to retrieving and some to flushing,most probably what's been passed on from the parents.

there is a product you can buy called GameScent ( probably others) that comes in different scents like pheasant,water fowl and duck and is used on training dummies. something like this may get your dogs attention :)
