My Spinger Spaniel isTerrified

by Aaran Bradley
(Watford)

I bought Annie a few days ago from a couple who were trying to train her as a gun dog. They were getting rid of her as she "wasnt up to it" and they felt she'd be better suited as a pet.

I still want to train Annie but she is petrified of cars, the dark and doesnt really like males. I think she may have been hit, I hope I can help her as she is only 18 weeks old.

Hi Aaran
it sounds like she has not had the best start in life, I think your best course of action is to get her to trust you first in a safe place such as her new home.

Do this through gentle play, a gentle tone, getting down on her level and making sure she comes to you. Plenty of praise and treats needed here. Hopefully this will build up her confidence and trust in you over time

Then enrole her in puppy classes to get her socialising and build up her confidence with new things from there.

This will take time and effort but it will work with patience and a gentle approach. Good luck and you are doing a great thing. You will reap the rewards as she will give so much back to you

terrified springer

I agree with previous posts. Take your time with her. There isn't any hurry. It's more important for her to learn to trust you. Last year we picked up a springer that was being turned into the rescue. We fostered her for.....5 whole days before she was adopted!! The original people had sent her away to be bird-gun trained. Thousands of $$. The second time they took her out to hunt, she decided she didn't like guns, nor loud noises....so they gave her away!! Lucky for her - she got a wonderful home with alot of children to give her the attention she needed. She was even afraid of the noise from going in and out the doggie door!

its strange when you here of this kind of treatment with our beloved springers.

more like there did not have patience enough for her.

I can tell you I have 3 geogeous springers so what if they dont pick game up every two minutes and there want that extra hug from mam and dad.

I get fed up of the you need to start them early on x y z its stuff, my eldest paddy is 11 months old he can retrieve spring swim do all the things a springers does and he loves it... well known fact the police force dont train em till after 12 months old as they are still puppys..

keep up the good work love your springer and they will love a million times over
