My springer attacks virtually any dog.

Hi all I am really really in need of some help and advise to my problem. We adopted a 6 year old springer and was told by the kennels that he is very good with other, but that doesn't seem to be the case. We have only had him a week and we all love him to bits, but this problem has now affected my wife as she is now really scared to take him out. At home he is the most loving and adorable dog who is so gentle but when he sees a dog outside he becomes so defensive. As we are worried incase he hurts a dog we have not let him off the lead yet. Si if there us anyone out there who can help us I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Speedy help
by: Anonymous

Hello I just want to back up the good advice from the previous reply.
Getting help from a trainer quickly will help nip bad habits (yours as well as the dogs) in the bud, will then help you/yr wife become more confident in him and with good recall you will be able to let him run his energy off as he needs good exercise to function normally. I do not know many springers who are satisfied with just lead walking. Also once off the lead, meeting other dogs off the lead is a different dynamic to when both or particularly one dog is on the lead because they are more defensive and demonstrate more aggression which can look scary.
I am glad he is settling but by getting professional help, in maybe just 1 or 2 one-to-one sessions, you will reap the rewards no end. You should be able to find someone via the internet or asking around locally.
Good luck

My dog
by: Anonymous

Cheers for the reply. Since I last posted this my dog has settled down a lot, he does still go for dogs but no way as much as he did. just come back from a walk and bumped into 2 staffordshire dogs on 2 seperate occasions one he wasn't interested in and the second there was a stand off but at most my dog just growled. So it is looking a lot more promising. Thanks again and I will keep you updated on his progress. :-)

Attacking others
by: Anonymous

Anxiety! The poor thing is still trying to settle in and find his feet. You've heard the saying "attack is the best form of defense" - well here is one dog showing just that. Get a good trainer to work with you because your anxiety will transmit to him & make the problem worse.
Perservere and hopefully time will show you he is just as loving in and out of the home.
Good luck.
