My springer spaniel has problems listening?

by Tammy
(uk)

Hi guys, please can someone give me advice, i am slowly starting to lose patience with my springer spaniel. he is a boy, 14months old. we have only had him just over 2 months.

In the house he is very good and listens quite well. On the park is a whole different story, i understand he has a lot more distractions but its like hes a totally different dog. He is very loving at home but he will not even come near us on the park although we did use abit of clicker training and when he does drop the ball for us we say 'come' to him and now he has clicked on he will come then we will throw the ball for him again.
He can run upto other dogs and not come back when you shout him, its just like hes deaf on the park. and it very irritating, i just dont know how to train him, whats the right techniques to use, i just dont know. help!

our 15 months dog is exactly the same, just browsing now for ideas.. looks like he's not alone in it, small consolation. We tried a training lead and a recall training course but the power of the walk and other dogs is obviously winning. Good luck with your dog and let us know if you find a solution.

A Springer thing keep calm NEW
by: Alfies Mum

My boy is 5 years old and bonkers outisde get really excited I took advice from a trainer of Springers. He said that I was hypeing the dog up and he would not listen because I was getting excited and yelling and he was mirroring my actions.

He suggested I stay very calm use slow movements and to use a hand signal or whistle and only one word COME. It took a while but he started to pay more attention. I always stroke him slowly - never rough up his coat speak to him in a fairly quiet firm voice. I never realised I was making him over excited I have always had collies before and thought I could train my Springer in the same way. They are hard work and need lots of mental stimulation do not give up. My boy is 5 and still turns a deaf ear on occasions its all about staying calm and patient lots of luck

We have a loving springer of 10years, and I hate to say it but when outside she is still not a very good listener. Since they are bird dogs the more you chase the further they will go. She has learned that when the tone of voice changes and I am just standing then the fun is over. She will then swat and potty and look at me like mom I just needed a potty break. So good luck. Springers are special we have two. The boy is not as avid a hunter and he listens better outside.

hello ,i have a 13week male english springer ,which ive had since he was 6 weeks .this is my ever first pup and going really well ,the BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE ANYONE WITH A SPANIEL is to b very patient and start ur training from day one . start with the basics - sit , give me ur paw , stay ect . these type of dogs r very keen learners ,and pick up very quick . use tip bits if u want ie;little bits of chicken ect. only take ur dog of the lead/harness ,when u know he is ready - or u will have problems . try training him/her of the lead in a quiet garden ect, where u can train them to sit and then stay while gradually u take a further step back every time ect . always use a extening lead , as this gives them a little bit of leaway without letting them of fully till u fully trust them complety . even take ur dog for training walks with a friend who has a dog a keep them both on leads and c how it goes ect .and finally always praise them when they have done a good thing , whether its a small thing or not !!! so remember to keep the training up and have lots of patients and u will end up with a loving well behaved dog xx GOOD LUCK xx

Springer not listening NEW

I have the exact problem too. We have a 14 month old girl and have had her two months. Our springer interrupted a football match and ran around the pitch chasing their ball, we couldn't get her back for 1/2 an hour!! She is now at obedience training, I'd really recommend you try it.

Your Springer is still very young. And all dogs, especially Springers require ongoing training. I would look for a training class where you and your dog can learn together.
