My Springer Spaniel is scared of other dogs

by Maria
(Texas)

Hi my Springer Spaniel bitch is scared of other dogs.

She is fine with my other dog (Yorkshire terrier. but if she comes across another dog out and about no matter how big or small, she will either run away or if she is on the leash lash out and try to bite them.

She has been like this since an very small pup. We found her hard to socialize when a pup because she would just run about barking and not settle with another dog near her.

Any Advice on how to manage this would be really helpful.

Thanks
Maria

Nervous spaniels
by: April

I had exactly the same problem with my Springer Puppy. However, I trained him to not worry about any other dogs by training him to do tricks and just doing these when other dogs were around, he found me way more fun that any of the other dogs so was able to socialise more and more. Be careful though, when I was socialising my dog with a 'friendly' dog he was attacked and we had to go right back to where we started again. I hope this helps =]

Scared
by: Michelle M

I will watch this closely. My Rosie is also a scaredy cat...err...dog. We too tried to socialize her as a pup. She loves her fur-sister but other dogs scare her and she too barks/ retreats.

You aren't alone.
