Seizures in Springer Spaniels

by Matt
(Rexburg, Idaho)

My wife and I are looking to make a springer spaniel part of our family, but have known them in the past to be prone to seizures. Is this common with the breed, should we consider anther breed because of this health issue? Thanks!

Hi Matt
I have never known of any springers with Seizures, but thats not to say that there are none. I think it comes down to the breeder you get one from. Make sure you speak to people who own puppis from that breeder, or alternatively adopt a rescue springer.

epilepsy NEW
by: Janine

i have just lost my gorgeous liver and white springer spaniel to epilepsy. It's a cruel and heart breaking illness. When I got my Alfie I didn't get him from a breeding a family home. He was 11 weeks old epilepsy does not really come until between the age of 3-6 years. I regret not going to a breeder that kc register its so heartbreaking watching the suffer my advice go to a proper breeder see the parents ask how many litters the mother has had and at what age she was on her 1st. I would hate anyone to suffer and go through what we are going through with out him.

I have had my precious Springers for 27 years and they have all been rescue except for one and none of them have had seizures. They are a wonderful, healthy breed that will add so much fun and happiness to your life.

Seizures in Springers
by: Anonymous

Your best chance of a pup who doesn't have the genetically inherited type of epilepsy is to go through a breeder where you can check it's line.
In this day and age, it is possible to know generations back, of not only parents, but the siblings. Research the topic with the help of your computer. I have a Welsh Springer Spaniel and could see that his parents, grand parents and great grandparents and great great grandparents did not have seizures or produce seizing offspring. While you are checking, check for hip dysplasia too. Be sure to check for the HEALTH of the lines. Championship lines, unfortunately does not absolutely equal Healthy lines.

Unfortunately, other things can produce seizlures:
getting ahold of snail bait or other garden poison, certain tick bites,
a bonk on the head from a sudden stop in the car, or being "knighted" with a metal rod in the hands of a toddler.

By the way, I had a cocker springer mix who lived to 15 with epilepsy, fairly well controlled with meds. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but it is not a death sentance, either.

Seizures
by: Michele

Hi Matt -

I don't think seizures are any more prevalent in Springers than any other breed. Any dog can have seizures, just like any person can.

Springers are great dogs, but they are high energy. I would definitely do some research on the breed. I have 2 and I love them both. The older one requires a lot more pack leadership than the younger one. Springers do tend to think they should be in charge.

Good luck!

seizures in spaniels
by: Anonymous

Hi, regarding seizures, it was at one time, more known in some welsh springer lines.

On this link to the English Springer Spaniel Club , you will see that it can be in springers but in general, springers are a healthy breed.
