Springer Not recognising me her owner

Today Molly our English springer spaniel whose 11 was in my father in law's garden I climbed the fence to get in & instead of her barking Molly was cautious but had to sniff me before she recognised me. It was like she couldn't see me properly & usually a stranger shed bark. She reconized me but not until I was close.

Bad Eyes Perhaps NEW
by: Sasha

Perhaps you should have her eyes checked if you are concerned. I sometimes have a feeling though that Spaniels in general do not have the best eye sight. No scientific basis, just a gut feeling watching my dog and other spaniels at school working compared to the herding or sight breeds. My dog has also on occasion not recognised me or other family members and seems to only calm back down when he has sniffed us. This happens mostly at night or when I change my shape i.e. carrying a big backpack, crouching in the garden pruning and yes even while scaling a fence. So perhaps for Spaniels they rely more heavily on their noses than their eyes. If this doesn't occur too often though (more than once a week) I wouldn't be too worried.
