Spaniel becoming aggressive NEW
by: Anonymous

I have never kept springers before but have kept dogs for over 40 years and most of which have been large utility breeds. I use the same rule of thumb with my springer as I have done with all my dogs. When children or people visit the house the dog is put away. They need peace and quiet and quite often misunderstand what is going on in "our world".

Remember when you bring a dog into your home you are adding a member to your "pack". You MUST assume the "Alpha" (top dog) slot and whatever you ask stands with brutal reinforcement! If you step inside your dogs world and see things from their perspective you will understand that when "humans" gather and start laughing, high pitched squealing, lots of high energy atmosphere, to the dog this is his/her pack getting ready to hunt/kill. Watch a documentary on wolves you will see what I mean. small children are easy prey when the dog, through no fault of its own, has watched "the pack" revv up and get ready. We brought dogs into our world for our own benefit and pleasure. They were happy roaming the earth taking what they could to survive and over time we have cross bred and inter bred to make them sleek adaptable killing machines. In closing the blog I will offer this advice. Treat your dog as a dog and not as your child. He has to have his own bed and/or chair not yours. when you allow him on your bed/chair you are not being kind, you are giving up your hierachy enabling him/her to take over. Feed him last when you have finished your meal. NEVER from your plate or the table. In a pack the alpha dog eats first the rest of the pack has what is left. You can love your dog as much as you want, treat him with respect and he/she will be the best friend you have ever had but he has to have respect, security and routine. I hope I haven't bored you! If I can help anymore just ask! Get inside your dog's mind! You'll be amazed!

Naughty Springer NEW
by: Mike

Hi my daughters springer is 18months old, neutered about 2months ago. He is caged while she is at work but i often take him out or bring him to my house. We have 2 dogs an old Springer of 15 an a Lab of 9. He respects the old Springer but always nips the Lbs fur all over who just lets him.
My daughter often brings him to ours in the evening for dinner but he has started to get agressive towards her when she is ready to go home and even aprt way through the evening now sometimes charges around snapping at her. When she has calmed him he is totally placid?

Bit more details NEW
by: Sasha

I would just like to know what you mean by your dog has suddenly gone aggresive? Is it a male or a female? Has it been neutered or not? Is it aggresive towards people, children, dogs or innanimate objects. Did any big changes in your life happen recently, moving to a new house, a new partner a new child? There are a multitude of reasons for dogs 'suddenly' becoming aggresive (often its not as suddenly as owners think they may just have missed the initial signs).

With the limited information I would recommend speaking to your vet and finding an animal trainer in your area with experience with aggresive dogs.

From my experience with springers though I would probably guess that its fear aggresion which seems to be the most common problem as they are quite sensitive intelligent dogs. Does your dog just go into a rage and attack anything or does it lower its head, tuck its tail between its legs and growl before snapping? These are all very important things to note and I suggest you look at your dog and note the behaviour. Perhaps by giving a more detailed description of the problem someone can help you on this forum otherwise a proffesional trainer who can see the dog would be your best bet.

Hope you manage
