Springer Spaniel Eating poop !

by Kevin Harrison
(Minehead)

Hi guys, would really love some advice about my 1year old springer/cocker mix.
When he was younger he was on Skinners and for the last 5 months he has been on Burns dog food ( we were told this is the best for spaniels ).

Whenever out on a walk he will eat poop,he used to eat his own but not so much now, but any other poop, dogs, rabbits, horses, he will eat it !

Even after I have told him no and he leaves it he will walk on and a few minutes later...... Poop eating !

Any ideas guys ? Starting to be a real issue with him !

From Anna@Love-springer-spaniels.com

Hi there, to stop him eating his own, feeding him pineapple chunks it makes their poop taste even worse and they won't do it again. Not sure about what to suggest regarding eating everyone elses, lets hope someone from our gang can help.

Good Luck

Eating poop NEW
by: Rose

Hi,
I'm actually going to post on my blog http://essdogtraining.blogspot.com/ within the next few days about this as my spaniel did this as a puppy - horse poo - not as extensive a worry as yours. He is now 17 months old.
You need to get your dog focussed on something more exciting than eating poop as spaniels have highly sensitive smell awareness the poo is attractive to them.
I always took a ball out with me so that when he went for the poo I would distract him and get him to chase the ball & move away very quickly from the poo. He was always interested in chasing the ball but sometimes ran back to the gross poo snack so you need to introduce rewards & commands when he does the correct behaviour.

The only thing I can suggest is try taking treats with you on a walk and tell him to keep away from the poop and if he does then reward him.

Our male ESS eats poop, especially our kittens from her litter tray (saves me cleaning it I suppose).

I have known dogs to crunch on dried cow-pats and also one dog once that ate the wets ones!!!

I have no idea why the do it but your'e not alone.

The main thing you have to do with your dog eating so much is to worm him more often.

Good luck!

Pooper eater

I have no advice for you, but just to let you know you are not alone in this! Our Sammy is a poop eater - not his own, nor his sister's, Cassy. I have lots of gloves because I'm always washing them after picking poop out of Sammy's mouth!
