Springer Spaniel Jumping on people

by Karen
(Ontario Canada)

We have a lovely 1 year old English Springer named Dixie. She is a great girl except when anyone new comes into our house

Her jumping and excitement is overwhelming and we have to hold her to avoid her knocking people over. This even occurs when my husband or myself returns home. We have tried ignoring it by not responding and turning our backs to her but without much inprovement in the behaviour. HELP

From Anna@love-springer-spaniels.com

Hi there
I know how irritating this can be, what I have used in the past is a very simple technique whereby you completly ignore her until she has moved away and laid down. It may take a long time to do this so you probably need to set aside an afternoon to go out of the house and come back in. As you walk in and she jumps up turn away, do not give her any eye contact or talk to her. Then when she has finally settled then you can give her the attention.

Hope this helps

Stop your springer jumping up NEW
by: Anonymous

We have used two very successful techniques to great effect. Firstly, when you come in the door, turn away as soon as your dogs jumps up, say nothing, (this is essential) and completely ignore your dog. Very soon you will notice the jumping up will become less frantic. Our Welshie is a year old now and although she still occassionally jumps up, I ignore her, move away and she stops immediately. Another good method we occassionally used is to stamp your foot (not on the dog obviously!!) and say NO firmly, they dont like the sound and generally back off. The most important thing is to be consistent and to get other family members and visitors to adopt the same technique wherever possible and dont forget PRAISE YOUR DOG WHEN IT BEHAVES WELL, positive re-inforcement works wonders!

dog jumping at people
by: Anonymous

One of the ways I have stopped our dogs and my mums dogs from jumping u at me is......

When they jump, lift your knee and they will hit this and not get to you, I then ignore them and just say 'no' and keep repeating the knee jerk until they sit and wait.

I used this with our old ESS (rip Holly) and it worked and use it on our 2 nutters now.
