Springer Spaniel needed potty breaks in the middle of the night

by Mary

Our 2-1/2 yr old springer mix female sleeps in our room, in our bed actually, which I love. She gets up during the nite and scratches the door. I choose to ignore her and she will come back to bed. But my husband jumps up and takes her out to potty. He thinks she has a very small bladder Because she is a small dog! And since she always does relieve herself he thinks he is right. Of course she has been trained to "go" whenever she is taken out. Our previous dog was a larger dog... hence larger bladder, in his mind, so she could make it thru the nite. Help me explain to him that it is like the crying baby and you must not give in. He says he'd rather get up and take her out instead of having to clean up a mess that would be his fault for not taking her...

up in the middle of the night NEW

It sounds like your springer has trained your husband well. It's a habit that will be difficult to break, but if you can try to be patient and don't respond at all, soon it will learn that a good nights sleep can be enjoyed by all without a potty break.
