Springer Spaniel that Spills water dish

by Sue
(Los Angeles, CA)

I just rescued a 3 year old springer spaniel. She is absolutely perfect (maybe not absolutely) except that as soon as I fill the water dish she empties it all over the floor with her paws. Any suggestions other than putting water dish outside?

From Anna@love-springer-spaniels.com

Wow thats the first I have heard of that. Have you tried a really heavy ceramic bowl that she cannot tip up? Not sure what else to suggest.

Water

I have a puppy that does that, and what I have been doing is to not fill it all the way. I fill the bowl so that there is enough for him to drink for most of the day, but he doesn't seem to be at all motivated to play in it anymore. I have also started filling it a bit more just little by little and he hasn't dumped it again yet.

Splashing water

Both of my springers have done the same thing - splashed with their paws in their water bowl. The older one has grown out of it and I expect the pup will in time too.

Buddy Bowl
by: patti

There is another kind of bowl called the Buddy Bowl.
It is a 3 part bowl that is totally unspillable. You can flip it upsisde down completely and not spill a drop. It also has a ring around it to keep their ears out. They can't get their paws in it to spill it out either. I liked mine so much, I bought a 2nd one for the dog shows.

dog water dish

Yes! The non tippy water dish has the added bonus of keeping out springer spaniel ears and mine eliminates what used to always be a trail of water 10 feet out from the dish. No more dribbles! I keep regular bowls filled with water outside but inside, it's all nice and neat. (Jolly Pets makes the dish.)

I use a bowl like the above mentioned road refresher. It's awesome because the dogs don't dribble or get their ears in it, either. I keep regular bowls on the deck outside for them to have fun with. But inside, it's all princess manners!

Road refresher

My spaniel used to be messy, then found a bowl called road refresher its brill. The dog has to press on tray that sits on top of water to get water to rise, plus it has a ring round the top.Never spills even on car journeys. Hope this helps x

Water Spilling

We use a bucket! However the downside is if they try to get in it (and yes, we have one that will try occassionally!!) they floor is saturated.

My springer spaniel does the same - I got a bowl in a wooden frame. It's a big bowl so only needs to be half full. It worked for me.

dog food dish OURPETS
by: Anonymous

Well we used to have a metal dish she tipped over all the time when on the floor with her paws. Then we were given an OURPETS feeding center. It has 3 levels of height and it has a food and water dish well that the metal bowls set in with a recessed lip to slip your finger in to lift the bowls out. We never had the problem again and had it on the highest setting. The person who got it for us got it from the Fosters Catalog. Hope this helps.

Water bowl fun
by: Judy J

Our 15 month old Springer loves to splash the water out of her dish with her paws, also. She doesn't do this every day, so we just put up with it. Hopefully she will outgrow it!

Still spilling
by: Sue

That is exactly what I have. She doesn't tip it over but paws the water out. I ended up putting water dish outside as my dogs have access to go in and out at will. I would prefer to keep dish indoors but I may not have a choice.
