Springer Spaniel urinates when left alone
my 6yr old springer spaniel, urinates when left in the house alone for any length of time, and jumps on the kitchen work surfaces. He has a 12 yr old labrador - male as company when I am out.
Can you please help me address these issues? From Anna@love-springer-spaniels.com
I am sorry that you are having this issue. It sounds like a classic case of separation anxiety which in some way is a compliment.
Take it from his perspective, you are teh single most important thing in your dogs life and he hates to be parted from you.
So you have to desensitise him abit. Ween you are at home teach him that he doesn't have to always be with you, so ignore any attention seeking behaviour such as jumping up. Only give him attention when he is calm and quiet.
Increase time that he is alone and away from you. Start by putting him in the garden for 5 minutes, then go out and greet him after that period and reward him. do this little and often and increase the time.
Another great thing to do is to distract him when you are out. Invest in a long toy and fill it full of tasty treats and peanut butter, give it to him as you leave and it will occupy him for hours and he should forget that he is missing you.
Good luck and let us know how you are getting on
All the best Anna
