Springer Spaniel with an overshot jaw

by Dave
(Staffordshire, England)

Hello I have a 14WEEK OLD Springer called Floss. she is developing what I understand to be called an overshot jaw (lower jaw is shorter than the top) I have spoken to the vet who told me there is nothing to do and that unless it is effecting her eating shouldnt be a problem. It isnt a problem for me, she is a much loved family pet I am just after any facts or experiences people have of this ? The distance at the moment is about 1/2 an inch

Thanks. Dave

underbite NEW
by: Roma's Dad

We got a 4 month old Springer who we named Roma (about 7 years ago)and I made the comment that she looked like she was pouting. I thought it was cute the way she stuck her lower lip out. We examined her mouth and found she had an underbite. We took her to the vet, who said she might need braces or surgery, but only if it was interfering with her eating. It didn't, and she is as healthy as can be. We absolutely love her and think her little underbite is very cute.

follow on NEW
by: Dave

Hi I thought I'd do a follow up for this.

Flossy is now 7 months old the overshot jaw is the same as always.

She is very pretty, very active and the overshoot dosent effect her in any way.

It is also only really noticable if you look closely

Jaw NEW
by: Anonymous

its a common issue, but your pup still has time to grow out of it.

Several breeds can suffer from overshot or undershot jaws and most have no problems whatsoever.

It would be advised not to breed from her, if you are thinking of doing so as it can be hereditary

overshot jaw NEW

My Willie, now 4 years old, has the same thing and also is missing some teeth on top (never grew in). I'm sure that's why he was a rescue dog, never reclaimed by his original owner. He eats like a horse, and only difficulty he has is playing tug of war, since it's hard to get the rope toy secured! But he lives for his tennis balls and fetching, is the most wonderful, silly, fun and loving dog I've ever had. My vet confirmed it was no problem since he eats normally. The dog catcher couldn't believe someone would let a purebred go, but am I glad they did! He'll never be a show dog, but he's the star in my household. Enjoy your baby!
