Springer who is Underweight

by Peter
(Glasgow)

Hi. My male Springer has just turned 10 and seems to have lost weight in the past year. He now looks too thin. I've tried feeding him more but it just comes out the other end more and he doesn't put weight on. He's been wormed and still he's too thin. Any ideas? I see the av Springer weight is about 21-25kg, mine is about 19kg.

Thanks

Thanks NEW
by: Peter

Thanks folks for your help. He hasn't changed in any other way over the years and certainly doesn't appear ill and also hasn't slowed down at all since he was a pup (do they ever slow down!? ), so I'm feeling maybe it's just his age, but I'm going to take him to a vet just for a check. Many thanks everyone for your help.

Weight Lose NEW
by: Carol Sampson

My oap - 13yrs young, showed the same symptoms last year. After a check up at the vets it was discovered she had a slight problem with one side of her heart.
She now has medication and is as daft as ever, and her weight has evened out.
Get your chap checked..........just incase.
Good luck.

vet visit as soon as possible for a full blood and urine test.
might not be a bad idea to have regular weighing sessions and also keep a record of food and water intake.best wishes

take the dog to the vet if everything checks out then you can try senior food or a different type. But your vet should be the very first place

Weight loss NEW
by: Michele

As others have said I would definitely see the Vet and have some blood work done. Your Springer, at age 10, is a senior citizen! He is aging just as we do. And just like us, senior dogs require more health care.

I have a 13 year old Springer who has displayed the same weight loss. She's lost about 3 pounds over the past 12-18 months, though she has now leveled off. She eats well (I cook all her food - no commercial dog food), she gets regular exercise and she has normal bowel movements. She sees the Vet for a complete physical and blood work annually. Eating, drinking, urinating and bowel movements are all things to be aware of. Should any of these things seem different, you will be able to recognize that. You've already recognized the weight loss, so you obviously know what to look for.

underweight springer NEW

I don't think the weight loss has anything to do with feeding. Have him checked by a vet. I had a dog that started losing weight dramatically and it was due to heart failure.

your dog is just getting old, you could try changing to a dry food for sensitive stomach's and see if that helps keep it from coming straight back out.

If it's something that worrying you the best thing you can do is go to the vet for a checkup, they'll be able to make sure nothing is wrong and recommend a diet that's tailored to your dog.

hope this helps :)
