S[ringer Spaniel Ear Maintenance

I have a wonderful new springer spaniel puppy and am new to the breed. I am interested in being proactive in caring for his ears to avoid any problems. What maintenance do you do to prevent ear problems. I read about 1 TB of water, 1 TB of hydrogen proxide, and 3 TB of detergent. It sounds like alot of detergent to me, so I am interested in hearing what other springer owners do.

Keep the ear fur trimmed short especially for air getting in/out makes a huge difference for us.
Whilst we have never had an infection we no longer use any cleaning stuff which was a bit worrying anyway.

We have a 6month old springer he loves swimming and running through the grass the other week he ended up with a ear infection even though after every walk we check for grass seeds nr the ears as this can be common. He was given drops and now the vets have recommended ear cleaner once- twice a week just to stop it happening again well not stop but try and prevent it. The vets did say you can buy ear cleaner from local pet shops but he did say many of these will smell - as we know springers are well known for there amazing smell- as my vet put it would you like aftershave down your ear.Makes sense if you ask me so just be aware if you decide to buy ear cleaner.

We have had springers since 1992, and have never had any ear problems. Do you need to mess with it if there isn't a problem? Maybe you live in a humid area.

I have 2 springers and i use otodex drops and have never had any problems,They are 5 and 6 and i swear by this product,I keep a check on their ears and wipe them out with cotton wool and salt water, if they smell a bit musty i use the otodex, they love it as they get a nice ear rub ,Be extra carefull if they go in long grass for seeds etc, always check ears when you get home.
