toilet habits and nipping

Hi I have an 8 week female springer Fern. I have had her for 3 days, she comes from a litter of 10.

She is use to a crate she goes in there at bed time, when I go on the school run and sometimes for a few hours when I do cleaning.

I have no trouble with her being in the crate as I put the radio on otherwise I believe she would tear the conservatory apart plus theres a cat flap and she has already gone through it.

We go for long walks 2 or 3 times a day. Everything was going great she would go outside to do her jobs as I call them and give lots of praises when she does them, but today well she has peed 4 times in the house when I have opened the back door to say do your jobs shes turned the other way and gone in the living 3 times and once in the bathroom. I will admit I was rather cross as yesterday she did so well.

Also she is starting to nip at my 6 year old playfully I say no to her so any ideas would be great im a cat person normaly this is my first time at owning a dog.

From Anna@love-springer-spaniels.com

House training a puppy is like potty training a child, it goes really well for a while but then you have set backs. Just keep up with the positive reinforcement and she will get it.

As for the nipping that is perfectly normal and will last for the next 10 weeks or so, chec kou my guide to Springer Puppy Biting and this should help you teach her the right behaviour. My 20 week old springer Fidget has stopped this all together now so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck

thanks for your advice but i would like to make it clear, i didnt say that i had taken my puppy for long walks i said walking now serves a purpose. we wont be doing that for a while yet. and she has had her 1 st set of jabs vet check wormed and fleed. i have ask the vet if i could take her up and down my road and as there is a field behind me which i go as there are no dogs there the vet said it was ok as long as she dosent come into contact with other dogs which she hasnt. its easier for us to do some training as my garden isnt big enough. infact up and down my road is quite enough for her.

Hi there

Just a word of advice - you shouldn't be going on long walks with an 8 week old puppy - I doubt she should even be out yet as she won't have had her vaccinations.
Puppys shouldn't be going on long walks until they get to 6 months + as their bones are still very soft and forming. This should be build up slowly over time.

thanks since i have written my last comment. fern is doing well now i think i may have expected to much from her after all shes only a puppy. i let her in the conservatory and kitchen area not in the living room now as i want her to have her space and i have mine. but should i shut the door so she dosent get confused with the toilet training and open it for when she needs to go to the toilet as i thought by leaving the door open would give her fresh air and she could go out as she pleases? shes a bright girl she knows whats being said to her. i have always been told that spaniels are highly strung dogs not sure if thats true the ones i have met aren't like that. she dosent like being in a car but hopefully she will get used to it as i like going to the woods and beach for long walks. it gives a great purpose for walking now. i will put some pics up soon. thanks for the advice im sure i will ask questions from time to time this is a great website already i have taken advice of some of the topics very positive thanks ;o)
