We have a 6 month old spaniel and we have paper potty trained him. He has done really well with this method. We want to teach him to potty outside now.

Potty Training

I tend to agree with Michelle and unfortunately think 6 months to just be training the pup to go potty outside is a bit late.

The first night we had our boy at 7 weeks we put him outside and said go for a wee. Of course at that age he won;t know what we mean but we kept repeating this everytime we took him outside and eventually when he did a wee near to the point when we said 'go for a wee' we congratulated him and made a big fuss so he made the connection.

We did place paper down by the door at night but there were only ever a few wee's on there in the morning. I think its really repeat repreat repeat with them until they know that the outside is where they go.

Thankfully we never had any mishaps in the house after that (although our boy does sprinkle when he gets excited) and I think its good to make a big fuss of them when they do something right and not make them feel really bad when they have a mishap.

6-mo potty training

Springers (in my experience) are very easily trained! Ours go way out to the edge of the yard to do their potty.

Do you have a doggie door?

Potty training

I don't want to make you mad, but I personally think paper training is a waste of time. Especially if the papers are in the house because the only thing you're really training your pup to do is potty in the house, which is obviously not what your ultimate goal is!

That said, you have had success with training him to use paper and now you just incorporate the same things you've been doing, but move it outside! Springers learn quickly and since you have the basic 'potty' command down I don't think it will take you long to acclimate him to the outdoors.

You should completely remove the papers and stop using that method as you train to go outside. If not, you may just confuse him.

Make it a fun experience and be sure to give a treat when the potty has been accomplished. I bet you can have him trained to potty outside in less than a week!
