Why has my springer spaniel got a red paw

by Lisa

He is 13 months old and is itching and chewing the top of his left paw. He has made it really red and sore looking. Why?

From Anna@love-springer-spaniels.com
Hi there it could be artritic pain but he is probably too young for that.

Check in between his toes to be sure there are not matted bits that are iritating it.

The other thing this could be is a dermatitis type condition caused by licking, the only way to stop it is to put a lampshade collar on their head to stop them licking.

If in doubt check with your vet

Red Paw

Our 2 yr old Springer had a condition similar to Michele's. He chewed and licked his left hind foot raw. The vet gave him a cortosone shot and we followed up with a cortosone cream. The condition was gone in a week. Wish we had taken him in sooner.

Foot chewing is usually an indication of some type of allergy. I would definitely take him / her to the vet and get it checked out.
