Will Jogging with a 2 year old healthy Springer hurt him to run on asphalt.

I run with my 2 year old and lately he has been slow to get up from laying down. We took him to the vet and she said that he had strained his back. It looks like when he gets up, one of his back legs is asleep. That is the best way for me to describe it. He walks and runs fine and has a good appitite. The vet said to watch him for a week and see if he improves and not to run with him for a week. Will running one and a half miles a day with this breed cause hip problems in the future.

Running NEW
by: Cecilly

I take my 11 month old springer on a 3-4 mile jog (while I'm riding my bike) nearly every other day. She loves it. We start out slow and average about 6 miles per hr. (altho she begs me to let her go for a fast sprint at least once during her runs of up to 17 mph). I hope this isn't hurting her!!!

asphalt running NEW

Did your vet check the hip socket on the side that seems to give him the most trouble. He could have some hip dysplasia or arthritis on that side. Did you start him slow on the run, working up to the mile, and warming him up just as you should. The only problem with asphalt that I have seen is that their paws will get tender and if it is hot their paws might burn. So not laugh but my dogs have shoes and when is to hot they use the treadmill.
