Worried-Over exercising 4 1/2 month springer spaniel?
by Christine
(Bristol)
I have been walking my puppy twice a day for 25 to 50 minutes since 3.5 months of age - about 1/3 is on the lead and the rest is in a field/woods. He does run a lot at a high speed.
Having read on this site this appears to be far too much and now I am worried about what damage I have done to him. He isn't tired when we get home so I thought he was ok. Have I totally messed up? How will I know if I have?

Hi Christine
Don't worry, just cut back a bit and focus this time on Training him little and often.
When George was this age I would take him out for a 15-20 min walk in the morning and evening and then I would do 4-6 10 min sessions of Training in between, outside so they can run around.
Also incorporate play in that time as well as it is great exercise and really helps develop the bond.
You won't have done any damage especially if you cut back now. As for them not being tired, I know what you mean, I can take George for a 12 mile run in Ashton Court (I am Bristol based too) and he is always up for more.
Good luck and let us know if you have any more queries
